Den Haag, 7 maart 2008 - The Europe China Foundation (ECF) is strongly advising the Dutch Government and members of the Dutch Parliament not to start a hearing about the Humanrights in China. As China is only recently started to develop its country and system, the Western countries should support the Chinese Government and its people in a possitive way with respect, in its effort to create a harmonious society. The Chinese people and the Government are fully aware of the situation knowing that some issues still need to be improved.

As China is a very big country where 1/5 of the world's population is living, it is obvious that some issues and situations will take time to improve and change. It is all work done by people. ECF is strongly convinced that China will do its very best to do create a harmonious society for al its people. But the Western world (and the Netherlands in particulary) should allow China to do this according its own view and insight and at its own pace in relation to its own culture.

Europe also had its own development in this field. Wasn't the Netherlands the last country to abolish the slavery? Didn't the Netherlands had to be forced by the US and the UK to hand over Indonesia to its own people? Strange when you consider that the Dutch where only recently being occupied by the Germans and had experienced it self what it was like to be occupied. We (the Dutch) of all people should keep a low profile and stay humble.

Europe had time enough to improve its internal human right situation, although even now the Netherlands is still struggling with other etnic groups (born in the Netherlands) living there amongst only 16 million people. China with more than 1.3 billion people is doing very well and although there are still issues that need to be improved, it is a great achievement the way China has developed the last 30 years.

The Western World should drop their (arrogant) attitude towards China telling them what to do and what not to do. It is up to China and an internal affair. When Western leaders and Government Officials would read more about Chinese culture they might understand how and why.

Protesting and finger pointing is very inappropriate and disrespectful towards the Chinese people. ECF is against the attitude and behaviour of the Dutch Foreign Minister, H.E. Mr. Maxime Verhagen, showing no backbone in this field. When you do want to protest, do it during the Trade missions to China. Doing business with China is very much wanted and supported by the Dutch Government and the Dutch Parliament and its present attitude makes no sense at all. When Mr. Verhagen does think the Olympic Games can be used as a catalyst to improve the human right situation in China, he obviously doens't know anything about China and its culture. If this is the case, it makes Mr. Verhagen unsuitable as Foreign Minister.
